Smiley Elmore 2:10

Doing good man? How are you?

Mat Zalk 2:11

Good. I’m so excited to chat with you a little bit about your history of entrepreneurship, your family, Eminent Media, the whole deal? Let’s start at the beginning. How did you end up? How did you start Eminent Media? Yeah, man.

Smiley Elmore 2:25

So found it 2020 I used to be a lighting programmer for this place and Bixby Lutron control for savant, you know, the the smart home systems, I would install and program it. And it’s funny because I was like, you know, the smallest dude working there. So I was always a duty to, you know, like, crawl up in the attic. And, you know, I’m fighting through the insulation and all that. But then, you know, COVID happened, and they were already a small business. But this ran into like, you know, financial issues, and had to let some people go and I was one of them. And I was already I already had a couple clients on the side that I was doing. I’m using websites is something I’ve done since I was 17. I did my dad’s website for his first first gym when I was a kid and I’ve been programming since I was really young. And so I had a couple clients on the side. And then I really had like two roads and those who like go on unemployment. Or you know, just say eff it and you know, go all out and try to do my thing and and so that’s what I did I you know, Oklahoma is a cannabis, medical cannabis is legal. And so I found my niche. By going to dispensaries I used to go door to door. And I have my little fliers and I’d be like, you know, I’m gonna give you the for 20 special. And so I would build them a website for for $20.02 $100 a month. Wow. Yeah. And with with cannabis, you’re not allowed to run any type of digital ads on like Facebook or even Google a lot of times you can get penalized even for talking about those topics. And so what how we help our customers out a lot is through SEO by one leveraging AI to using a lot of our website partners in order to build like strong backlinks and digital relationships in order to make sure that when people started to like dispensary near me, or whatever the name of the client is, you’re able to you’re able to come up for that. So what is SEO? SEO is search engine optimization. The the way I like to explain it to people is like so on Instagram, like if you posted a picture with the rock and the rock tags, right? The Rock out like 120 something million followers, right? You would obviously get like a lot of followers from that. Right. So goo goo the Google algorithm is similar. So if you have a popular website and they give you something called a backlink like they link a website, they link to your website on their website. Yeah. Google sees that you make a changes you’re popular With that people are going to visit you and they boost you in the rankings.

Mat Zalk 5:03

Got it. So they view backlinks into your website from from other popular websites as an indication that many people are gonna like your website, and then they just feature you more in the in the algorithm in the hierarchy.

Smiley Elmore 5:17

Yeah, man, that’s one part of it. There’s also just having enough content and the right keywords on your site. You know, a lot of like, you want to rank for words like not just like dispensary, Tulsa, you want to rank for like, a lot of times what people search for. So when people type into their phones, a lot of time, it’d be like, dispensary near me. So ranking for that, you know, is a little bit of a challenge is you can’t just put, you know, Namie on your site. Yeah. And so you have to you have to write you have to write blog articles about what are the best dispensaries near me and kind of create relevant content that people are actually going to read. For

Mat Zalk 5:50

the AI generated content? Are you there’s a lot of hype around AI right now. For sure. Are you using Bard are using chat GPT and other large language model.

Smiley Elmore 6:01

So we actually use a few we’re partnered with Jasper AI. And, and one of our main clients is this company called open box AI, they write great, one of the great greatest cold email tool you’ll ever use. A lot of times people write really long, cold emails that never get opened. They write fun, catchy ones that are relevant and timely. But Jasper allows us to one research the right keywords to produce content at a high at a high level. And then we have two developers and two designers on the team that you know, of course, you know, add their own flavor cut through and you know, make it human content.

Mat Zalk 6:42

Yeah, cool. I love that. It’s so much so much amazing stuff that you can do with AI. So I love that. So tell me a little bit about your history you 2019 You were working at at this company that’s doing that was doing advanced kind of electronics for Lutron control for that sort of thing. Let’s go back further. How did you come to the world of entrepreneurship? Before that? You started at 17 doing websites?

Smiley Elmore 7:09

Yeah. Before that wants to finish it’s always been something that that’s my family. Like, my name is Smiley. I’m smiley to third. I was named after my grandpa. My grandpa was born laughing. So they named him smiling. Yeah. But my grandpa, he always told me, you know, like, like, like, I can be someone who couldn’t be just because like, you know, like, the time he was born in, you know, like being born in like, 1945. You know, the world was obviously a lot different place for black people. And, and so, but my grandpa had a company called smiley Elmer and Associates, they did financial services, insurance, and a lot of things like that. And it was actually one of the first black businesses in Tulsa. My grandpa passed away in 2019. And my Uncle Chris runs it now. So they’re still up and active. And my, my dad was an entrepreneur as well, growing up, he was a personal fitness trainer, and he ended up being able to buy his own gym. And so it was always something that, you know, I wanted to do, but it was I don’t know, it wasn’t until I actually, you know, kind of, you know, got let go and had the fear of the pandemic and everything. I kind of, you know, made me hit that rubber to the road. Yeah.

Mat Zalk 8:28

Did Do you have any sense that the Jim Crow laws in Oklahoma affected your, your grandfather’s ability to do business? Was he mostly serving black black business people?

Smiley Elmore 8:39

Yeah, it was, he was mostly serving black businesses. And I think that’s a, you know, like, like, after, you know, obviously, what happened in Tulsa, Nitro, 1921, and everything like that. I think a lot of the black businesses kind of, you know, united and really realized that we had to stick together. Yeah, in order for, you know, us not to be taken out, and everything. But he also had, he also had some white clients as well. But I think I think that it definitely affected it. But, um, I mean, that that quote, that that he told me, I’m going to still resonates with me today. You know, he was like, you know, you can be someone I can’t be just because of the time I was born. Yeah. And so, um, you know, I think, you know, one, you know, right now, it’s probably one of the best times to be alive and because of AI, and because of, you know, some of the technological advances that we’re talking about, but also just because of, you know, I guess the equal opportunity. Yeah. Beautiful, beautiful, quote,

Mat Zalk 9:34

sad, but true and amazing, good. indication of where we’ve come since 1945. Let’s talk about specific to your entrepreneurship. What are the services that Eminent Media provides?

Smiley Elmore 9:51

percent. Our main thing is that that’s my quote. Websites are better when they work. So a lot of people

Mat Zalk 9:58

I I looked at yesterday, I was on a really fancy website, and I was trying to show this some of the properties that they that they design and you know, digital communities, and they just would not load. And I was like, oh my god, it’s so painful and they don’t work. Right here

Smiley Elmore 10:16

that Exactly, exactly, man. My, um, so our main services are web design, SEO. We also do social media print design, and we do event promotion. So that’s the, that’s the big five. But what really got me bro it was, I mean, I used to, like when I was 1718, I used to listen to this guy, Gary Vee a lot. V. Yeah, go Yeah, gave me was was was one of the people who, you know, really got me to believe that that kind of be an entrepreneur. And I remember when I worked at that lighting company, we had this do from a local marketing company come in, and he was, you know, like, 60 year old man, he drove, he drove a G wagon. And he pulled up and he had, like, you know, like, like a full fruit tray. He had an assistant. And he had like that coffee that comes in like a box. You know what I’m saying? Yeah. And so I knew he was gonna say something we like, you know what I mean? And he was, you know, it wasn’t

Mat Zalk 11:13

it wasn’t Sean Whistler. Was it? drugs or anything? It wasn’t.

Smiley Elmore 11:23

Exactly. And I was like, to 1920 at the time. And, you know, I knew a lot about marketing. I knew a lot about tech. But I was like, Man, I saw this guy come in, and I was like, Man, this is, you know, the bite, you know, this guy’s really doing it, you know? I mean, and, and he sold my boss on, I think it was like, $70,000 of billboards a month, you know what I mean? And I was, and I was really, I don’t know, take one taken aback and to like, you know, kind of stupefied almost, because I was like, you know, what I want. What I wanted to do was, like, really manifested in this. Um, and I think they do do websites and stuff over there at Whistler, but I don’t, um, we’re all about digital marketing, because I don’t really, it’s hard to quantify the ROI of a billboard, you know what I’m saying? It’s hard to quantify.

You can’t track it, or you can’t track it. And and,

and when you go to buy one they do. They do offer up you know, how many people drive by based on statistics? This is not what I mean, when you drive and you either drive and you’re on your phone. This is how it is. Yeah. Yeah.

Mat Zalk 12:36

Yeah. Shawn Williams and impressive entrepreneur. I think he’s got like, 800 billboards or something around. Yeah. Pretty impressive. Yeah. Whoever else has a lot of billboards.

Smiley Elmore 12:45

Exactly. And they definitely have their place because like I was saying, cannabis isn’t something that’s banned on billboards. You know, so a lot of cannabis and medical marijuana companies are able to take advantage of that, and I’m sure they’re affected.

Mat Zalk 13:00

Yeah. What about events? Tell us a little bit about events that you’re that you’re promoting. Oh, yeah,

Smiley Elmore 13:05

man. Um, so our event partner, the underground collective, savy Cray and all them they they do a great job of helping us you know, do like the foot traffic and everything like that. So we do a lot of cannabis events as well as like comedy shows. We have a Halloween event coming up. That’s actually tomorrow at the rabbit hole bar. And also, yeah, so past weekend we had the stormy Olympics. It was up here at the hedge on 26th and Sheridan. That’s where That’s where our headquarters is that guy like a good on 120 people and we have everything from the first four hours were like an educational kind of session. I was like told the eight Wow we had Yeah, it’s this kind of Yeah, vendors come in. We got a few sponsors like well lawless cannabis at ko power flower Tulsa. And they you know, set up set up their booths it’s kind of like a Makers Faire thing. And so we have classes going on that kind of educate people about you know, like, the difference between CBD THC and how to one consume not just for pleasure, but for for like healing and elements and stuff like that. And then we have you know, some people who sell their sell their products up here. A lot of local businesses like that. And then there’s the competitions. So we had a fastest toker salons cannabis. Yeah. Well, I was cannabis, they, they donated a bunch of one gram joints, whoever smokes smokes, it’s the fastest, you know, they get a gift card. And of course, you know, a gold medal. Wow.

Mat Zalk 14:41

Okay, two questions. One, do you have to have a medical card to come in and enjoy and participate in this in this event?

Smiley Elmore 14:49

To come to compete? Yes. To buy a ticket. No. Yeah, sorry. I don’t agree well, whether there are regulations and especially if Uh, you know, especially you know, here with almost everything. So if they if you do win a prize and this cannabis related you have to you get you know, a certificate, and you go to the actual dispensary where it’s verified and everything. Yeah.

Mat Zalk 15:14

Cool. Number two is, are you legally able to give away cannabis in Oklahoma or must be sold for some nominal amount?

Smiley Elmore 15:23

No, you can’t you can give it away, if they have a if they have a card and everything, but to kind of one protect ourselves from that. And it’s a little bit murky. Like there’s been people who’ve been prosecuted, and there’s some people who haven’t got it, and the people and the people who have it are of a higher tax bracket, let’s say, and I’m saying, yeah, yeah. And so and so, um, to kind of protect ourselves from that we just go this certificate route, you know, got

Mat Zalk 15:48

it. Interesting. I mean, I know for alcohol sales, for example, if you’re doing promotions and you want to do in some states, you hear of like, like college town bars doing 10 cent beers, or, you know, whatever dollar bucket night or whatever it is, but in many states, you have to actually do, you cannot sell alcohol for less than you that less than the cost. So you might do 60 years or whatever if you do but I’m sure beers have gone up. But like when I worked at a restaurant, you couldn’t do less than 60 cent beers for promotion. I didn’t know that. Yeah. Interesting. Tell us a little bit about the dispensaries that you’ve that you’ve helped and, and maybe some other examples of fun things you’ve done.

Smiley Elmore 16:32

Oh, yeah, man. So we’re working right now. With sky leaf dispensary. They’re owned by Ruby Mays. There isn’t a person maybe? No, no. Ruby Mays is a it’s a it’s a company it’s a cannabis Free Will edible and tincture brand. Probably one of the they’re expanding into Colorado now. Shout out to my guy Travis. They’re doing really well. That’s

Mat Zalk 16:59

awesome. They’re expanding to Colorado. Yeah. Where Colorado has been legal for recreational Yeah, for a long time. That’s awesome.

Smiley Elmore 17:07

Exactly. Colorado, even mushrooms are illegal. It’s a whole new world.

Mat Zalk 17:11

Wow. I love generally, the nature of the marketing improvement when things legalized like it used to be that you’d get cannabis it’d be, it’d be you know, whatever. And some stupid bag now it’s like designed and there’s artwork around it. It’s pretty exactly how there’s been innovation surrounding the cannabis industry. Exactly,

Smiley Elmore 17:32

man and like, like, like, like, my dad’s a sheriff’s shop. Oh, my dad’s a cop. And like, you know, we have security and everything at these events. And it’s amazing just to see, like, how many people like them, maybe they used to do heavy drugs, I used to be in jail or something like that. And now, you know, they’re, they’re business owners. And they’re, they have good jobs as button you know, as, as a budtender. Or you can make you know, like 660 75k If you’re going to a job. And so that you know, these these are just a real industry. These are real careers. And so it’s, it’s, it’s pretty amazing to see.

Mat Zalk 18:07

Yeah, so how many how many current cannabis stores are you helping in in Oklahoma?

Smiley Elmore 18:12

20 To 22 actual dispensaries we have a few. The column like processors like Ruby like Ruby maze isn’t like they’re in a bunch of dispensaries, but they’re like a brand of product. No, I’m saying. Yeah. Another another one of our main clients is harvest health dispensary. They were. Yeah, when I was 2323, that they were my first real dispensary client. Shout out to Tony, he my dad used to train him. And so that’s kind of how that that connection got made. Yeah. And so, you know, he, you know, I was a young dude, I gave him a good price. I showed him some examples of my work and, and, um, he, you know, really helped me out talk to him a couple of times about, you know, this personal stuff, business stuff. And he was, you know, receptive in that as well, when we’re able to take you know, his site from, you know, like 500 visitors to 12,000 a month. And that also reflects on your, your Google My Business, like when someone leaves you like a five star review on Google? Yeah. Yeah,

Mat Zalk 19:14

so those are? So how do you actually do that? How do you take him from 500 to 12,000? monthly visitors?

Smiley Elmore 19:20

Yeah, so like we were saying earlier, man, we’re partnered with Jasper AI. And so our team, we’re able to write relevant content. A lot of it’s like educational, so it’d be like, you know, like, what is THC? What is CBD? What are some of the differences and benefits of each of those? We also facilitate his Google My Business account. And so you can actually post on that kind of like, it’s an Instagram. And that so that shows up when people are driving by your store, this, this and that, and that in turn, you know, drives traffic to your site. Yeah.

Mat Zalk 19:55

Cool. That’s awesome. 500 To 12,000 monthly visitors. Yeah. It’s a lot of cannabis users

Smiley Elmore 20:02

a lot, man. And you’re actually able to track exactly how much they’re doing. So with weed maps, which is like the only company pretty much in Oklahoma that you can, like, sell, sell actual cannabis online. So we embed that into their site. And so people are able to tell, you know, more or less checkout directly from their site. Yeah. Cool.

Mat Zalk 20:23

So now that your business is up and running, you’re following in the footsteps of your grandfather and your dad and the world of entrepreneurship. What’s keeping you up at night? What, what? What in the world of business ownership is, is weighing on your mind?

Smiley Elmore 20:40

Um, it’s weighing on my mind, I guess, like scaling. Um, you know, we, me and you, we met at my friend, Jorge Sanchez, birthday party. So me and Jorge, we went to this was called a pitch competition. I guess I was like, like, May, May or April.

Mat Zalk 20:57

Was that an Atento or was that at?

Smiley Elmore 21:01

ACT? ACT act house? Yeah. Whole Person? And great guy. Yeah. Great. Yeah. hella cool, man. And, and the idea we had, it was, it was called a consistent contact. It’s like an AI tool to, like small business owners to kind of, you know, stay at stay in touch for people who aren’t super tech savvy. Yeah. And, and we actually got third place out of like, it was like six or seven teams. And so that was pretty cool. Like, it was, it was a it was a 24 hour event. You know, nobody got any sleep. So you kind of, you know, butting heads and getting frustrated. Sure. But, but, but we made it through and, you know, that’s, it helped us in our, our business relationship and friendship today. But it showed me like, one the scale of like, funding because, because, like, you know, I was always, you know, like, I have a four employees now, but I was always like, you know, I just took the profits and reinvested them. I never got like, a loan or like, investments or anything like that. Yeah, and so and so it really showed me like, I don’t know, like, if, if you kind of get certain documents in order if you you know, just get your shit right and have the right people talk to the right people. You can really Scott skyrocket your business with some you know, investor capital. Yeah, that’s something that I’ve been considering.

Mat Zalk 22:29

Are you thinking about investor capital, like an equity component? Are you thinking about going to a bank and then getting some some debt financing? Going

Smiley Elmore 22:37

to a bank and getting something into debt financing? Yeah, I’ve never I’ve seen too much shark tank for that era. Yeah.

Mat Zalk 22:46

Once you go to the bank and get a little bit of definition and are able to scale a business a little more, you’re gonna move out of the cannabis space or do you want to just continue to hammer you know, door to door sales emails, whatever it getting your foot in the in the door of these cannabis shops. So we

Smiley Elmore 23:04

we work we work in a few industries, bro. Like, like, cannabis is definitely, you know, it’s definitely what started definitely what? You know, it’s kind of the grassroots element of it. But we have people in the medical industry or people in the construction industry. We got a couple of restaurants. A couple. They do like custom balloon arrangements. Yeah,

Mat Zalk 23:26

my kids. Yes. I love my birthday parties. Yeah,

Smiley Elmore 23:31

they do. Yeah, they did. And I would definitely like to move into more of a SAS tool. Select my company I was talking about earlier. I’m openbox. A, I actually met them at that that act House event. Yeah.

Mat Zalk 23:48

And so the company or they came in just to help coordinate this event.

Smiley Elmore 23:55

That there’s also company I think, the founder or or he I think he’s from, he’s from California. But but they the ACT house, they have that $70,000 fund. And they were one of the the cohorts of that one of the recipients of that pool. So but they but they have a SAS like a service as software as a service. Yeah. And so I’ve been working with my shot at the Draco my partner working on a tool, an SEO tool that businesses can just type their website into. And it’ll tell you exactly, you know what, you have to name the page. There’s some words and examples to add to the page. So we can just sell that. And then we’re not so much in the, I guess, customer service side of it. Yes. I think what I like to do is develop a tool and scale it and perfect.

Mat Zalk 24:47

It sounds way more scalable if you can just sell sell the service. Exactly.

Smiley Elmore 24:52

Yeah. Yeah. So and you know, I love the day to day this isn’t that but I’m thinking you know, just the For a long time you don’t you don’t you don’t want to be answering. You know, calls I want in the morning forever. Yeah. Where

Mat Zalk 25:05

do you want to do when you when you were growing up?

Smiley Elmore 25:09

When I was growing up, I wanted to be a video game designer? No say, Yeah, I was a in seventh grade I won. There was like a TSA technology Student Association. I won like the the first place trophy for state for just a little it was like a little PacMan rip off, you know, I’m saying. So that that was always something I was really, I was really passionate. So you know how to code.

Mat Zalk 25:34

Beyond designing websites, or before designing websites, you’re already involved in coding.

Smiley Elmore 25:39

Yeah, man. I’ve, I’ve been coding for a long time. And it’s weird because like, like, if I type, um, you can type into AI even chat GPT like, like, write the code for Pac Man. And it’ll write it out for you, you know, I’m saying. So it sounds kind of like, like, like my little brother. He’s 16 He code. And I’m just like, you almost don’t need to know how. So that’s kind of

Mat Zalk 26:02

how you have to know where to put that in. If I wrote, if I put it into GBT design write me the code for Pac Man. I literally would not know where to take that code and paste it and then how to run that code. So that I can go back man.

Smiley Elmore 26:18

I got it. No, no, I got you even that’s like a fire. It’s a couple a couple Google searches away. Yeah. And that, to me, the most interesting part of aI think it’s like the deep fakes.

Mat Zalk 26:31

You know, you can like what be Donald Trump in a monkey in a monkey voice or something? Are you actually saying like Elon Musk, and you can do video, you can do like, voice voice stuff,

Smiley Elmore 26:44

video, video chats, or you’re like, pretending to be like, you know, but like, you know, Joe Biden, and you’re like, you know, declaring war on another country or something like that. Wow.

Mat Zalk 26:55

How do you do that? You go into GBT and you say I want to deepfake or something and you have to go to like, much deeper than that.

Smiley Elmore 27:01

No, that’s like, that’s like like video software you know, I’m saying and, you know, similar like, no Snapchat filters and everything like that. Yeah. Crazy.

Mat Zalk 27:12

Um, where do people go to find out more information about about Eminent?
